The AUD portion is hard to listen to unless you're really into what's being played, and for that, Bird Song & Playin' are definitely worth one's time. The vocals are really off, though.

The SBD is very warm-sounding & the vocals don't drown out the instruments, which is a nice treat. The horns are a nicer one. They're very loose & sort of Louisiana-style (like a cross between Mingus & the Dirty Dozen), and the regulars (especially Garcia) are all playing extremely well. Wonderful Truckin' & Eyes. Unbelievable Weather Report Suite, even coming from a whole season of great WRSs.

All in all, I'll take everything from Bird Song on and smack 5 stars on it.

maybe some kids from the college band?? I've heard the hells angels accompany the dead on their harley's for the opening of "Not Fade Away" once. Who knows, eh??

But the horns really don't do it for me. The band sounds like it took some energy from them, but the horn players themselves sound unrehearsed and even off key at times. "Eyes" is wrecked.
The aud portion (through Playing) is listenable by early '70s aud standards, though it's not the best '73 aud out there. That might be 6/22 or one of the Universal Studios shows.

Big River - Jer's flame is flying off the candle again
Row Jimmy - supremely sublime (w/bella trilla brilla bella donna)

Subject: big fan of the horns
dont' get me wrong, I don't think Martin should have joined the band from there on in, but the september horns as a short lived event is very cool. This happened Probably as a result of the wake of the flood studio sessions and from the fact that jerry and merl john kahn and martin played together. It grows and takes on a life of its own, this night added Ellis as a second horn to deepen the sound from the previous few.

let it grow gets a lot of attention, id argue it's better on the 21st a few days later where they really take it off the page with help from the horns.

It is the Eyes and the Truckin that are a thing of there own on this night, although they are common tunes all year, there is a spirit found here that is unique. Let me sing your blues away, I know they played it on sept 8th in long island and on the 21st in philly, this is a great song that lets jerry open up his vocal range, (it does sound as if he is enjoying playing and singing it with keith and donna) and this is in my opinion the best OMSN out there, better than any europe 72 or may 77. how do you like them apples.

email me at happy to share with some good listeners

Subject: good playin but...
not a big fan of the horns, and i dont think to many people were at the time seeing as they didnt last too long. The dead never seemed like a horn kinda band. they dont sound bad on some tunes like eyes of the world, but on truckin, i mean come on this tune just does not lend itself well to horns. i did like them on wake of the flood though. from the reviews here it seems alot of people love the horns. maybe they genuinly like horns or maybe they just like this show for the novelty factor who knows. either way theres some good playin here.

Subject: Who Is Singing
Who is singing lead vocals on Let Me Sing Your Blues Away? Is that Keith? I think it is. All the times I saw the Dead live from 71-79 I do not think I ever saw Keith sing once in any of the SF shows I saw during his tenure.

The WRS is beautiful with the flute.

This show merits 5 stars. The sound is dicey so i feel i have to give it 4 overall.

Subject: Second set is Great (Sound of 1st poor)
Don't waste your time with the 1st set, it's a poor sound quality Audience tape. The second set (starting with Mississippi Half-step) is Great as is the sound quality. The dead are acompanied by horns (Martin Fierro and Joe Ellis) and sounds fantastic. It's a rare gem and if you are capable of downloading the 2nd set do so. I would give this 5 stars if not for the 1st set sound quality.

I am giving this show 5 stars, so that the people just looking at ratings will find it. The sound quality is typical 70s AUD for the 1st set, and decent SBD for the 2nd.

But THE PERFORMANCE IS AWESOME, specifically the 2nd set. If you haven't heard any of the '73 shows with horns, I suggest this as a primer. Especially the Let It Grow, which gets real crazy. This is one of my all-time fav GD shows, because it is so unique, and the playing so inspired.

Good show, However the sound on this one is a little rough due to the audiance composite. What a Fall run! 5 for the show 3 for the sound

I just love this show. The horns are present on the majority of the second set which is awesome. The Eyes and jam in Let it Grow are schorchers and the flute in WRS Prelude is very delicate and sweet. Sound is nice and crisp (Phil is a little light but that may just be on my setup on the ol' computer). The band is very tight and the horns fill in well. Heard this on Dead Hour many years ago and couldn't wait to get a new copy! A must have for anyone who digs the horns with the Dead!
